Special exhibitions in 2010

Evening wear 1909-2009
Den Gamle By is putting on its Sunday best with an exhibition about the celebrations which have been part of Danish life in the last 100 years. The holidays throughout the year were celebrated – both religious and more secular such as Christmas and Easter and the political such as the International Women’s Day on 8th March. The Danes have particularly been dressing up for the special occasions in life such as weddings, anniversaries, and graduations. Many parties such as cocktail parties and garden parties were held because people wanted to be seen and to have a good time. The exhibition will consist of several kinds of evening wear.
Exhibition period: 2nd January 2010 - 2nd January 2011.

International poster art
The poster as a medium is alive and kicking! This is being celebrated in Den Gamle By with a whole building dedicated to posters. The newly opened poster museum has invited 120 artists from the world over to contribute their best works to the opening. The works featured are from Scandinavia, Russia, the Balkans, The Middle East, Africa, USA, China, and Japan. Besides the approx. 500 posters which make up the opening exhibition, three artists have agreed to design and create their suggestion of an opening poster. The three artists are: Japanese Norio Fujishiro, Finnish Pekka Loiri and Danish Hans Krull. To accompany the exhibition, an extensive catalogue with illustrations is available.
Exhibition period: 2nd January – Easter 2010.

Town prospectuses
The museum’s unique collection of town prospects consists of all Danish renaissance prospects from the German work Civitates orbis terrarium which illustrates depictions of the most important towns and cities in Europe. In this work Copenhagen, Elsinore, Odense, Kolding, Haderslev, Ribe and Tønder were all featured. Also Swedish and Norwegian towns which used to be under Danish rule were included: Helsingborg, Landskrona, Lund, Malmø, Visby (Gothland) and Bergen. To these can also be added the duchies of Flensborg and Slesvig. The work also features material for the depiction of Horsens, Nordborg, Vejle, Aarhus, Aalborg and Roskilde, however, these were never printed. The prospects offer the oldest and most credible representations of Danish towns and cities available today.
Exhibition period: Opens in February.

Shop windows 1974
Another part of The Modern Town is complete when the shop windows in the newest part of Den Gamle By have been installed. A lot of research has gone into creating the photo shop, the travel agent’s, and the glazier’s – all three typical shops from 1974.
Exhibition period: Opens in May

Poul's Radio
The radio shop Pouls Radio opens as the first real shop exhibition in The Modern Town. Here you can experience the fancy radios, clever reel-to-reel tape recorders, and record players of the 1970s.
Exhibition period: Opens in June

Poster exhibitions
New colourful exhibition by Peder Stougaard. An exhibition of the classic Danish posters we all know and love.
Exhibition period: Opens 9th October

Needlework shop
The needlework shop and haberdashery will be the colourful neighbour to Poul’s Radio. Here you can see the high-fashion embroidery and knitting of the early 1970s including exotic and imaginative patterns.
Exhibition period: Opens 30th October

Christmas in The Old Town
Danish Christmas through 300 years is the regular exhibition in The Old Town where all the houses are decorated for Christmas. We take you from the Christmas of the Renaissance in 1610 in the Mayor’s House to the Christmas of the inter-war period in 1929 in the home of the bicycle repairer. The special Christmas exhibition can be seen in the exhibition building behind the Mintmaster’s Mansion.
Exhibition period: 20th November – 30th December 2010
